  Adoption
Adoption is the legal act of permanently placing a child with a parent (or parents) other than the birth parents. Adoption begins with the severing of the parental responsibilities and rights of the biological parents and the placing of those responsibilities and rights onto the adoptive parents. After the finalization of an adoption, there is generally no legal difference between biological and adopted children in most jurisdictions.

  International adoption
International adoption refers to adopting a child from a foreign country. International adoption may offer a permanent family to a child for whom a suitable family cannot be found in his or her country of origin. Given that international adoption can be an extremely lucrative business for developing countries, numerous issues surround this type of adoption. Not the least of which is determining what sort of outcome is proper in a system that involves multiple interested parties: the child, the birth parents (if any) and the adoptive parents, and also the country of origin, the country of placement, the culture of origin, the culture of placement, etc. Other issues that can arise are whether or not the adoption industry is sufficiently regulated both within the adoptive country and with the supplier country to ensure that children are not being either stolen or bought and sold as commodities.

  Colombia Adoption
Colombia is a fascinating country where adoptive families come and go without difficulty. Colombia has a long history of adoption. They have had a very organized central authority in Bogotá for many years, known as the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare (ICBF) which processes the government adoptions and oversees the licensing of private orphanages. Children aged 1 through early teens are available for Colombia adoption. There are many sibling groups available, as well as special needs children. Many children are abandoned by single parents who simply cannot afford to feed them, or who must work to survive and cannot afford child care while they work. Others come from families where they have been neglected or mistreated and their parent's parental rights have been taken away from them. All of them need a permanent family.

  Vietnam Adoption
Children's Hope International began working with Vietnam Adoption in 1998. We have been doing humanitarian aid there ever since and did not stop our humanitarian aid support during the 3 year moratorium. From 2003 to 2006, adoptions in Vietnam closed to US families and the entire adoption system in Vietnam was restructured. In June 2005, the US and Vietnam signed the memorandum of agreement to allow adoptions to resume with US families. Vietnam now requires that all agencies be licensed. CHI was licensed on January 25, 2006 and we completed 60 adoptions the first year it opened. Vietnam Adoption program is a main adoption program of Children's Hope International.
